Karnataka HC allows bike taxis in Bengaluru, sets aside govt-imposed ban

The Karnataka High Court has permitted the operation of bike taxis in Bengaluru, providing regulatory clarity to a service that has seen prolonged uncertainty. The court’s decision allows two-wheelers to be used as bike taxis, subject to compliance with prescribed transport norms.

As part of the ruling, only two-wheelers fitted with yellow number plates will be allowed to operate as bike taxis. Yellow plates indicate commercial registration, distinguishing these vehicles from privately registered two-wheelers and placing them under transport regulations.

For operators and aggregators, the order sets clear conditions for compliance, particularly around vehicle registration. Riders using white number plate two-wheelers will not be permitted to offer commercial bike taxi services under the ruling.

The judgment is likely to influence enforcement practices across the city, as authorities can now regulate bike taxis based on registration status. It also sets a precedent for how two-wheeler-based commercial transport services may be governed in the state.
